KINABALU PARK AND BANJARAN CROCKER IN SABAH






Crocker Range (Banjaran Crocker in Malay), is a mountain range on the island of Borneo. Politically, it is within the boundary of the Malaysian state of Sabah, located in the northern half of Borneo. The mountain range separates the east coast and west coast of Sabah. At an average height of 1800m, it is the highest mountain range in Sabah. Mount Kinabalu, which is one of the highest mountains in Southeast Asia is part of this range. Part of the range, has been gazetted for protection as Crocker Range National Park since 1984. The area surrounding Mount Kinabalu has been a national park since 1964 and is the country's first World Heritage Site.




LOCATION:Located some 100 km from Kota Kinabalu city. After about 2 hours of picturesque mountain road, watch for the signboards that points you to the park entrance.

DESCRIPTION:
Located at almost 1,600-meter above sea-level, this park offers a variety of lodging options and has been a perennial favorite for the would-be climbers of Mount Kinabalu. Climbers usually would spend one night at this base station before starting their journeys to the top the very next morning from the Timpohon Gate.

Accommodation options include hostels, lodges, cabins and suites. The cheapest one is the Menggilan Hostel which offers 36 bunk-beds and will set you back around RM10-12 per night. There are also The Hill Lodge, The Peak Lodge, Nepenthes Lodge, Kinabalu Lodge and Rajah Lodge. The only suite accommodation - Liwagu Suite - will cost you about RM180 per night, but it has all the necessity amenities such as hot shower and heater. The night here can get very chilly.

At the entrance is the park office where climbers shall register for the climb. Also a short hill climb will bring you to the museum dedicated to this beautiful national park, as well as a monolith bearing the UNESCO World Heritage Site on it.
